The Breastfeeding Chronicles: Part 1

>> 3/09/2010

See this active little cutie?? Now imagine trying to nurse this little one when she is this excited! Around 4 months of age, Lauren started to get very distracted while nursing...looking at everything, trying to grab everything, scratching my face, putting her hands in my mouth, pulling my hair....ugh! We tried many various things: dimming the lights, making sure the t.v. was off, different positions, different rooms, but this little girl is just way too excited about life!

To make matters worse, she has started to bite and tug when she is nearing the end of nursing. Today we are finally headed to La Leche League! I can not wait to hear what suggestions they have about her distraction and biting.

Curious if any other mommas have been to an LLL meeting and their opinions about the support that they received. We have a monthly meeting here but I am not sure if you come every month or just when you need some advice related to breastfeeding.

I've never been to one, but my daughter is in the same stage as yours - easily distracted and biting/pulling. I'd love it if you would share what you learn today!

I had the same issues around that age, but my daughter grew out of it before I actually used any of the tips I learned about. Some things I've heard of:
*get a nursing necklace - different textures for your baby to manipulate while nursing, so hopefully she's not handling/pulling your hair, earrings, shirt, lips, etc. :)
*start using a nursing cover to keep visual distractions to a minimum
*if she bites, smoosh her face into your breast to get her to release, then take a short break from nursing (a minute or two). I did use this one and it took care of biting fairly quickly, although she seems to relapse whenever she's getting a new tooth!
*only nurse when she is somewhat physically relaxed. Try a massage, or singing and rocking first.

Finally, just know that this won't last forever! Babies just keep changing. Good luck, and let us know about how the LLL meeting goes!

LLL meetings generally follow a pattern of 4 main "topics", so yes, people go monthly. it's also a great place to socialize and just get to be around other nursing, experienced mamas! hope you had a great time and got some good tips!

Have you thought of a Mommy Necklace...they are awesome! And the owner/creator is the sweetest woman you should check out her fb page.

La Leche does meet every month, but the leaders are also available to help when needed. You can find your local leaders numbers on the La Leche website...great way to connect with other Moms :)
