'The Tallest of Smalls' Book Review

>> 10/26/2009

Inspired by a parable in his book "Fearless", Max Lucado created a children's version titled, "The Tallest of Smalls". Illustrated by Maria Monescillo, this short story discusses what to do when your children feels small and insignificant in this giant world and what your child needs from you.

"The Tallest of Smalls" takes place in a little town called 'Stiltsville' where a little boy named Ollie lives. Ollie was unlike the other peers his age with patches on his pants and socks that never seemed to match. He wanted so much to be like others his age and receive praise. One day he is selected to join the ranks of others and receive his first set of stilts where he can 'look down' at everyone else below him. Stilts are not as cool as Ollie perceived them being and he soon learns how to feel wanted and loved by others for who he is through the love of Jesus.

I really enjoyed reading this parable and following Ollie's journey through wanting to feel needed by others and recognizing that God made him the way that he is for a reason. I would recommend this book to any family with children in order to talk with them about relationships with their peers and the desire to feel wanted by others. The book has many analogies that I think children around the age of five and older would understand although the story is great for younger children as well.

*'The Tallest of Smalls' was received for free by Thomas Nelson: Book Review Bloggers in exchange for a 200 word review. My honest opinion about the product was given.*
